The Transitions project involves the conversion of data sets derived
from various natural and cultural processes into 3 dimensional sound
environments. The work involves both the decoding of pre existing data
sets from scientific studies, and the production of new material through
the use of sensors and microphones in experimental situations. The project
explores relationships between the physical, perceptual nature of hearing,
and the cultural/conceptual context in which human beings come to an
understanding of the world. It follows from the notion that hearing
is closely related to the sense of touch, that hearing/touch provides
a connection to the world which is somehow more intrinsically spatial,
more physical than vision, and that hearing/touch provides an understanding
of processes and connections which is fundamentally different to vision
and possibly deeper in many crucial ways.
